If you're reading this at 3am with a unsettled baby, multiple outfit changes already behind you, and wondering if it gets easier — I see you. I've been exactly where you are.
I'm Jo, founder of Cleo & Bebe, and I started this business because my daughter Cleo struggled with severe reflux and drooling. Those early months felt overwhelming, but through trial, error, and plenty of laundry, I learned what actually helps.
Understanding Baby Reflux: You're Not Alone
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) affects up to 50% of babies in their first three months. For some babies it develops into GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), which requires more management. The constant spit-ups, discomfort, and laundry pile can feel endless.
Practical Tips That Actually Helped Us
1. Feeding Position Matters
Keep bub upright during feeds and for 20-30 minutes after. I used to prop myself up with pillows during night feeds to maintain that angle.
2. Smaller, More Frequent Feeds
Instead of large feeds, try smaller amounts more often. This reduced the volume Cleo would bring back up.
3. Protect Their Clothing (and Your Sanity)
This is where waterproof bibs became my lifesaver. Regular bibs would soak through within minutes, meaning constant changes. I couldn't find bibs in Australia that were truly waterproof, absorbent, AND looked beautiful — so I created them.

Our Boy Waffle Tones, Earth Tones, and Gingham Glow bib packs feature a waterproof backing that actually stops liquid seeping through to clothes. One bib can handle multiple spit-ups, which means fewer outfit changes and less laundry.
4. Elevate the Cot (Safely)
Place a folded towel under the mattress at the head end to create a gentle slope. Never use pillows in the cot itself.
5. Track Patterns
I kept a simple note on my phone of when Cleo's reflux was worst. This helped us identify trigger times and adjust our routine.
6. Burp Frequently
Pause during feeds to burp, even if they seem content. Trapped air makes reflux worse.
When to See Your GP
While most reflux resolves by 12-18 months, see your doctor if your baby:
- Isn't gaining weight properly
- Refuses feeds
- Has blood in their vomit
- Seems in significant pain
- Has breathing difficulties
The Bib Solution That Changed Everything
After months of going through 8-10 bibs daily, I designed our waterproof bandana bibs specifically for reflux and drooling babies. The difference?
- Truly waterproof backing — liquid doesn't seep through
- Absorbent cotton front — catches spit-up before it spreads
- Adjustable snaps — grows with bub from newborn to toddler
- Machine washable — because who has time for hand-washing?
- Australian designed — made for Aussie families
Our customers tell us they've gone from changing outfits 6+ times daily to just swapping bibs. That's less laundry, less stress, and more time for cuddles.
You've Got This
Managing reflux is exhausting, but it does get better. Cleo is now a thriving toddler, and those challenging early months feel like a distant memory.
If you're in the thick of it, be gentle with yourself. You're doing an amazing job, even when it doesn't feel like it.
