Waterproof Bibs for Drooling and Reflux: A Mum’s Guide
Fresh outfit. Clean bib. Another little spit-up. And somehow, the clothes underneath are wet again.
If you have a baby who dribbles constantly or brings up milk after feeds, you’ll know how quickly the washing piles up. You might have plenty of bibs already, but still find yourself changing entire outfits throughout the day.
It’s something I remember so well with Cleo—and the reason I started Cleo & Bebe with my mum at our kitchen table.
When choosing a bib for a seriously dribbly baby, there are two things worth looking closely at: what’s inside it and how it fits.
Absorbent vs waterproof bibs: what’s the difference?
An absorbent bib soaks up moisture. A waterproof bib includes a barrier that helps stop that moisture reaching the clothes underneath.
Ordinary cotton or muslin bibs can be useful for little dribbles. But without a waterproof layer, liquid can eventually soak through the fabric and into your baby’s outfit.
A bib can feel lovely and thick and still let moisture through. Thickness alone doesn’t tell you whether it’s waterproof.
For babies who drool heavily or regularly spit up milk, an absorbent fabric front combined with a hidden waterproof layer can make everyday dressing a little easier.
What’s inside a Cleo & Bebe Signature Waterproof Bib?
Our Signature bibs have three layers, each with a purpose:
- A 100% cotton front to absorb everyday dribbles and little milk spills.
- A hidden TPU waterproof layer to help stop moisture soaking through to clothing.
- A soft cotton terry backing that sits comfortably against your baby.
The waterproof layer is tucked between the fabrics, so your baby has soft cotton against them. Our Signature collection comes in both rounded Classic and pointed Bandana shapes, with adjustable snaps and our signature neckline. CLEO & BEBE
Why the fit around the neck matters
Even a waterproof bib can’t catch a dribble that travels behind it.
If there’s a gap beneath your baby’s chin, milk and saliva can run straight onto their neck or clothing without reaching the front of the bib.
Here’s the little fitting tip I always share with mums:
- Start at the front. Gently position the bib beneath your baby’s chin.
- Check those little neck rolls. Make sure the neckline sits underneath them, rather than resting over the top.
- Then fasten at the back. Choose the snap that gives a comfortable fit.
- Check again once baby moves. The bib should sit close without pressing into their neck or restricting movement.
You’re aiming for snug and comfortable, never tight. If neither snap setting gives a comfortable fit, don’t force it.
The front feels damp. Is the bib still working?
A damp front doesn’t automatically mean a waterproof bib has leaked.
The outer fabric catches and absorbs moisture, so it can feel damp after wear. The waterproof middle layer does a different job: helping keep that moisture from passing through to the back.
Check the backing and your baby’s clothes underneath. If they’re dry, the barrier is doing its job.
Our bibs are designed to dry quickly, so a little surface dampness doesn’t always mean an immediate change. Keep checking your baby’s comfort, though, and swap the bib when it’s saturated, soiled or sitting wet against their skin.
There’s no single wear time that suits every baby. A little dribbler and a baby bringing up larger amounts of milk will have different needs.
What should you look for in a drooling or reflux bib?
When comparing baby bibs, look beyond the colour and shape. Ask:
- Does it have a waterproof layer, or only absorbent fabric?
- Is the material against baby soft and comfortable?
- Can the neckline adjust to fit without a large gap?
- Does the shape provide coverage where your baby needs it?
- Are the care instructions practical for everyday washing?
For spit-up that lands beyond the bib, a burp cloth over your shoulder or lap can be useful too. Bibs help manage the mess from reflux; they don’t treat reflux itself.
Made for the everyday outfit-change marathon
When I started making bibs, I wanted something soft and beautiful that could also keep up with our days.
Because when you’re already feeding, settling, cuddling and running on very little sleep, another wet outfit is one more thing to deal with.
That’s what our waterproof bibs were created for: catching the dribbles, helping protect the outfit underneath and making those messy little moments a bit more manageable.
